Ikwunga's new afrobeat genre
By
Cynthia Nakpodia-Ribeiro
The underground spiritual game better know as afrobeat has a new genre and star.
Beat Poetry that's what Ikwunga calls the style of his CD Calabash: Afrobeat Poems Vol. 1, a melding of spoken word poetry, brought to life on afrobeat grooves. Though performed mostly in pidgin English, Ikwunga has taken Fela Anikulapo Kuti's form of social commentary know as yabis and put a poetic tinge to it, thus pioneering a new and authentic dimension of afrobeat.
